THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Last month I wrote about “light” as an element of design.  The elements of design are the physical properties that may be seen, touched, or smelled—-light, color, line, form, size, space, texture, and fragrance.  For February I am going to continue the study of design elements with the element of “line.”

Line is the visual path through a design.  It is the distance between two points and gives structure and movement to a floral design.

Lines may be static or dynamic.

Static lines create strength and stability while dynamic lines are more energetic

interesting to the eye.

Static lines are rigid and unchanging.  They add stability and may be vertical or horizontal.

Dynamic lines create movement in more than one direction and may be curved, slanting, zig zag, or other irregular directions.

A line that is physically and visually present is an actual line.  When a series of points leads the eye from one point to the next it is called an implied line.

Actual lines are visually complete.

Implied lines are a series of points that lead the eye though a line.

A line design is a composition in which line is emphasized over form as the dominant element.

Llnear elements may combine to create a form.  Here the angled phormium leads the eye back into the other components creating a closed form.

In this design the two gerberas facing one another close the form with an implied line.

This design focuses on textures and soft earth tones that combine linear elements that create a vertical form.

Here the strong forms make an implied line that moves the eye in a dynamic rhythmic pattern.

A combination of curving Bells of Ireland and winding willow frame an implied line of chrysanthemum.
